Nobody should have to live with pig feces or urine in their air and drinking water.
Yet this has become an unfortunate reality near industrial-scale hog farms. Factory farms can leak untreated pig waste into the surrounding environment, posing huge health risks for nearby communities. And these operations are heavily concentrated near communities of color in eastern North Carolina, fueling an environmental justice crisis.
You can make a difference. Contact your state leaders and demand stronger protections for our air, water, and community health against hog farm pollution.
Industrial livestock operations generate a tremendous amount of feces and waste, often storing thousands of gallons of pig waste in leaky cesspits that can contaminate local drinking water. It is then sprayed on croplands as a fertilizer, drifting onto nearby homes and making people sick. It also releases harsh, burning odors that severely degrade everyday quality-of-life.
Urge North Carolina policymakers to strengthen regulatory safeguards at these “lagoon-and-sprayfield” operations! Reach out to your state senator or representative and ask them to protect our air, our water, and our people.
