Using hog waste lagoons to generate biogas is bad for our health, bad for our environment, and bad for small farmers. The cesspit and sprayfield waste management system used with waste lagoons causes water pollution and contaminated air.
What’s more, these operations are heavily concentrated near communities of color in eastern North Carolina, fueling a major environmental justice crisis.
Nobody should have to live with pig waste in their air and drinking water. But we have a chance to make a difference. We’re asking the NC Department of Environmental Quality to add commonsense safeguards for our health into their permitting process for facilities that convert hog waste into biogas. And we need you to join us.
Reach out to DEQ today and urge them to include commonsense protections for our air, water, and people into the biogas general permit.
We have provided a sample email you can send to DEQ. Feel free to use and personalize it, or to write your own message.
